Ingress is the augmented reality location game Google has brought on both Android and iOS. The goal of the game is to capture, defend, upgrade, and link portals. Players use their smartphones as agents of the Resistance or the Enlightened to monitor portals situated at real-world landmarks, historical sites, sculptures, and paintings. To earn points for the faction, a field between three portals must be created and maintained with success.
Here are some best tips, tricks, shortcuts for playing Ingress and getting to the highest level quickly.
1. Carry your phone with you outside.
Always have your phone with you. Whether you’re out for work, class, lunch, jog or just for a dog walk, carry your phone with you. There could be nearby portals. Even if you don’t have enough firepower to attack or capture a portal, it could be useful to hack it for portal key.
2. Use Ingress Intel Map.
See the full map from the official site at www.ingress.com/Intel which is a useful source of information. Knowing the location of surrounding portals is an invaluable help.
3. While attacking enemy portals, stand as close to it as possible.
Attacking with XMP, shoots a blast wave outwards from your scanner location. Since the resonators are located around the portal, the blast will hit more resonators. the closer you are to the portal, maximizing your damage potential.
4. Ultra Strikes are for destroying Shield Mods.
XMP Bursters are for general attack and capturing portals.
Ultra Strikes do have a smaller blast range than the XMP Bursters, but they can do more damage.
If you stand directly at the center of a portal, you can destroy Shield Mods with a few Ultra Strikes. So save them.
5. Glyph Hack by long pressing.
You can gain weapons, items, and portal keys by hacking. Long press the Hack button, you will see the Glyph Hacking screen. You will be challenged to repeat a series of glyph patterns on screen and will be rewarded with bonus items if you can pass the glyph challenge.
6. Save Power Cubes.
Power Cubes are crystallized formations of exotic matters or XM which can be used to charge your XM supply at any time. Use this when you need a quick supply of XM.
7. Drophacking.
If you want to build Control Fields, particularly multi-layered Control Fields, you will need more than one key from some portals, but if you already have key for that portal in your inventory, the portals will not drop key. Drophacking is the solution now. You should click on the small key icon at the top right of the portal screen before hacking a portal, and keep dropping keys for that portal until you have no more keys left. Obtain new keys after this. After the hacking is finished, just pick up the keys that you dropped from the map of Ingress. Be careful, however, that when you do that no enemies are around, as they may take advantage of it and collect your keys while you’re busy hacking.
8. Create Multi-layered Control Fields.
By nesting Control Fields within larger Control Fields, you will score twice the number of experience and Mind Units.
9. Always recycle your old stuff.
If your inventory is filled up with unused items, recycle it to gain a small amount of XM. One of the first things to be recycled is the Media Collectibles. Those are useless. Media collectibles in Ingress allows you to watch a relevant YouTube video but it doesn’t help you in the game.
10. Only Mod your most important portals.
Mods can drastically increase the effects of a portal. There are six types of Mods:
- Shield – Increase the defense of your portal and resonators making it harder to be taken down.
- Link Amp – Increase the portal’s link range. A rare Link Amp will double the portal’s link range.
- Heat Sink – Decrease the cooldown time between portal hacks.
- Multi-hack – Increase hacking capacity of a portal before it goes into the burnout mode.
- Force Amp – Increase damage to attackers trying to hack your portal.
- Turret – Increase the number of portal attacks on enemy agents.
If you want to maintain a portal, add some mods. A single agent can only load 2 Mods to a portal. So you’ll need the assistance of other agents to fill up all four Mod slots.
11. Submit your own portals to ingress.
Is there any landmark or important place nearby that does not have a portal yet? You can submit that portal to Ingress. When you are standing at the landmark, tap and hold on the screen then select New Portal. Then take a screenshot and submit.
12. Stay connected with the local player community.
Ingress isn’t a solo playing game. Higher level portals need up to 8 players to build. That’s because each agent can only deploy one L7 and one L8 resonator on a portal. Get in touch with the local players.
